Comparison

GstarBIM vs the alternatives

There is no single best BIM tool, only the one that fits the work you take on and the money you can commit to it. Here is where GstarBIM sits against the software Indian practices actually evaluate — on licensing, on compatibility and on what it is genuinely better at.

GstarBIM How it compares

What you are actually choosing between

Half the confusion in this decision comes from comparing things that are not the same kind of tool. SketchUp and AutoCAD are very good at what they do, but neither is BIM: there are no parametric building objects behind the geometry, so nothing coordinates itself and nothing schedules itself.

Licence models as published by each vendor, October 2026 — confirm current terms with the vendor before you decide.

The market went subscription-only. GstarBIM did not.

Autodesk stopped selling perpetual licences in 2016. Graphisoft phased Archicad perpetual licences out at the end of 2025, so new Archicad licences from 2026 are subscription. That leaves a shrinking group — GstarBIM among them — where you can still buy the software outright rather than rent it indefinitely.

  • A perpetual licence keeps working if you skip a year — useful when project flow is lumpy, which for most practices it is
  • Subscription is still there if you would rather have a predictable annual cost and the current release
  • Education and training-institute licensing is a category we actively support, not an afterthought

Compatibility is what actually decides it

You will not be the only tool on the project. What matters is whether you can take what your consultants send and hand back something they can use — a question about formats and certification, not about brand.

Where GstarBIM is genuinely stronger

Three things separate it in practice rather than on a feature list.

  • Interiors and KBB — parametric cabinets with cutting lists and BOMs, tiling that calculates its own waste, IES-based lighting. Most architectural BIM treats interiors as furniture placement
  • The learning curve from CAD — familiar shortcuts and layer behaviour mean a drafting team keeps producing drawings during the transition, which is the usual reason a BIM rollout stalls
  • Cost of ownership — the most affordable serious option in this category, with MEP and rendering included rather than priced as extras
FAQ

Common questions

Is GstarBIM a replacement for Revit?

For the large majority of architectural and interior practices, yes. It covers the same ground — parametric modelling, coordinated documentation, MEP and photorealistic output — and it sits inside a Revit-led project rather than outside it, importing RVT and RFA directly and exchanging certified IFC in both directions. The way to settle it is not an argument but a trial: run the 30-day version on a live project of your own, bring in a consultant model, and judge compatibility and suitability against your actual work. In most cases it proves a straight substitution, and we are glad to set that evaluation up with you.

Can we still work with consultants who use Revit?

Yes. GstarBIM imports RVT and RFA directly, exchanges IFC in both directions with buildingSMART certification, and GstarBIM 2027 connects to Autodesk Construction Cloud for projects run on that CDE.

Does GstarBIM offer a perpetual licence?

Yes — perpetual and subscription are both available. That is increasingly unusual: Autodesk stopped selling perpetual licences in 2016, and Archicad phased its own out at the end of 2025.

How does the cost compare with Revit?

We quote rather than publish, because it depends on edition, licence type and seat count. What we will say plainly is that GstarBIM is the most affordable serious option in this category, and that a perpetual licence changes the arithmetic over a few years in a way an annual comparison does not show. Ask us for a figure in rupees.

Is it suitable for a college or training institute?

Yes, and this is a category we actively support. Institutional licensing is available — tell us your student numbers and lab setup and we will quote for it.

Try it on your own project

A 30-day trial, a quote in rupees, or a conversation about whether GstarBIM fits how you work — whichever is useful.
